CASTIGLIONE DELLA PESCAIA

Castiglione della Pescaia lies between blue sea and green hills. This well-known seaside resort is very popular both with Italian and foreign tourists.

It boasts beautiful beaches with all modern-day comforts backed by a strip of thick pine forests which stretches to Marina di Grosseto. Thanks to the large number and high quality of available accommodation, port infrastructures and its undeniable beauty, it has held the record number of visitors in Maremma. The town is an ancient fishing village and every evening fishing boats return with their wriggling catches in the picturesque port canal, where today pleasure boats of all types dock.

Kitesurfing in Castiglione
The sea is uncontaminated and the long beaches of fine, white sand stretch to the edge of the pine forest. Tourists easily find everything they want for sailing, windsurfing, kitesurfing and other seaside activities, and just as easily find secluded beaches for contemplating nature, far from the lively and popular bathing establishments. In summer this area is considered one of the most interesting kitesurfing spots of Italy. In the afternoon the wind direction and intensity is very often ideal for kitesurfing and there are several kitesurfing schools at the nearby beaches.

The area around Castiglione della Pescaia is very interesting for its nature, with the State Natural Reserves Tomboli of Follonica and Scarlino, including the inlets of Cala Martina, Cala Francese and Cala Violina, small beaches which attract thousands of tourists every year. The vast expanse of surrounding vegetation offers refuge to a large and spectacular bird community living in harmony amid a diversified flora. Within the area, it is possible to walk, bike or ride along paved roads or pathways that penetrate the scrub amid pine needles and moss.

The hinterland of Castiglione della Pescaia hosts one of the most important wetlands of the Tuscan coast, the Natural Reserve of Diaccia Bortona, Ramsar site and host of the small WWF Oasis of Marze. Diaccia Botrona is considered one of the most important areas of wetlands in Italy with a rare ecosystem of international importance.

Punta Ala
About 15 km from Castiglione della Pescaia is Punta Ala. This tourist resort is famous for well appointed bathing establishments, excellent hotels and especially for its modern and fully equipped port, considered one of the best in the Mediterranean, and the ideal base to explore the Tuscan Archipelago.

Castiglione della Pescaia
Beyond the walled historical centre of Castiglione della Pescaia, complete with towers, gates and a 15th-century castle perched on an outcropping of a hill, also the historical centres of Vetulonia and Scarlino, the villages of Buriano and Tirli, as well as isolated archeological monuments like the Roman villa of Puntone and the Etruscan necropoli of San Germano and Poggio Tondo in Vetulonia are all worth visiting.
